Tommy Lawlor:
Tommy has been a football fan for more than 30 years. He went from typical fan to student of the game after reading about Buddy Ryan and the 46 Defense in a Sports Illustrated Super Bowl preview in January of 1986. That changed the world for him. He kept the bench warm in high school, but never let his lack of size, speed, or talent diminish his love of the game. In college he interviewed coaches as often as possible, picking their brain to help him understand the technical side of the game. After college, Tommy covered high school football for various radio stations and continued to learn from coaches. Tommy got a great opportunity in 1999 to study under a former NFL scout and learn about that side of the game, which had always fascinated him. Tommy was a draftnik going back to the 1980s, but now actually had an idea what the hell he was talking about.
Tommy started doing extensive draft study and note taking at that time and has continued ever since. He began writing heavily for the Eagles Message Board in 2003, about the Eagles and the draft. In 2005 he was co-founder of the draft site ScoutsNotebook.com. In 2007 the Eagles official team site gave him a weekly column. He has helped run a few Eagles blogs and now writes daily for his own blog, Iggles Blitz.

Jimmy Kempski:
Jimmy started writing about football after Brian Dawkins left the Eagles in free agency. He was mad that the Eagles didn’t use the franchise tag on Dawk, and people were going to hear about it. That was in the “fanpost” section of the Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation. The “fanpost” section of BGN is a place where anyone with computer and some time on their hands can write an article about the Eagles. Obviously, the content in that section of the blog is very hit and miss. At the time, Jimmy had a successful sales career going, and was working in the Wall Street world. His commute was an hour and a half… each way… so writing fan posts on BGN helped pass the time on the train. Jimmy liked reading the feedback, and was soon hooked.
(Quick aside: Why are Tommy and Jimmy writing in the third person on the about page? I mean… It’s not like somebody is writing this stuff about Tommy an Jimmy. Tommy and Jimmy are writing about Tommy and Jimmy. Anyway, getting back on track…)
Jimmy would eventually begin writing on the front page for BGN, honing his craft, and eventually would create Blogging the bEast, where he be journalizin’ the NFC East. He remains an editor at Bleeding Green Nation (writing about the Eagles), and now also contributes at SNY (writing about the Giants) and The Washington Post. I guess that would make Jimmy a “self-made journalist” of sorts… certainly not a classically trained one.
Jimmy has covered both Eagles’ and Giants’ home games from their press boxes, as well as the Eagles’ and Giants’ training camps, the NFL Combine, the Senior Bowl, blah blah blah. It was at the Senior Bowl where Jimmy first met Tommy in person. They watched from the bleachers as Tommy would point things out like “That linebacker needs to keep his head up in that drill,” and then we would watch as Mike Singletary (the LB coach running drills that day) would yell at the linebacker “Keep your head up!” Meanwhile, Jimmy made observations like “Hey, Vinny Curry is the only player out there wearing green pants.” Personally, I think that’s one hell of an observation.

Your podcast is pretty informative, when you get around to talking about football. A lot of the sessions are filled with banter back and forth about movies and other pop culture things. one word – boring!
Cut the crap and get to the point. Maybe Jimmy can write down an agenda of topics, and keep to a time table. I like that the discussions are loose, but c’mon man! (sorry).
Thanks for the reporting though. I know that’s tough work.
