Couple of reactions to the podcast. Thanks for getting this up so fast. It is great that I can listen to something Eagles related on the way to work.
- On Starship 7 decision making: Not buying the “rust” excuse entirely. He had a similar game against the Bills last year. It looked to me that he held on the ball too long and more importantly, stared down his receivers. On the last two drives, he did a better job of looking the defenders off and ball faking. I do agree that the one INT that you mentioned in the podcast (Harbor was open but he didn’t pull the trigger in enough time) could be attributed to rust.
- On Starship 7 being pulled: I would not have pulled him. I would have, however, maybe help him out some. Like, I don’ know, maybe run the ball? 3rd and long every drive is not how to help a QB regain confidence. Run the ball. Maybe it is only 3rd and 6 but my gosh, help him be successful since he was obviously struggling.
- On comparisons with other games: I think there was something like 3 or 4 straight games last year that the Eagles played well for three quarters, even had the lead in those games, and lost the game in the 4th due to stupid and undisciplined plays. This year was kind of the opposite. 3 crappy quarters and one quarter to pull out the win from the jaws of defeat. Encouraging from a glass-is-half-full point of view.
- On the defense: Defense was great all around. My one negative observation is there was one play where Kendricks was again isolated on a TE. Very reminiscent of the play against NE in the preason. He had inside help and only had to make sure he didn’t have a free release to the outside. Well, the TE went up, faked to the inside and sent square to the outside. Weeden missed him. Otherwise, it would have been a good gain. I hope this is not a trend. Teams with good TE now have seen Kendricks get burned twice on the same play. Expect Baltimore to go to that repeatedly.
- On Ryans: Awesome. It is obvious that his leadership and knowledge is making everyone else better, as expected. Again, actual stats is just icing.
